They essentially were trying to influence Americans to think in almost opposite ways. Johnathan Edwards was a part of the Great Awakening, a religious fever that swept the colonies and taught Americans to believe in God and to fear him. Implied in this is a sense of man’s nothingness and God’s supreme power and knowledge. Men just simply can’t know or understand all that much. Also, according to Calvinistic doctrine, it didn’t really matter how much you knew or how much good you did in the world, it was already determined whether you were saved or not. His impact was a turning to God in an effort to turn away his wrath.

Franklin had a much different idea about life and influenced our thinking in a different direction. Franklin was all about the power of the human mind. He believed that man could be as great as they tried to be. He showed us that we could be whatever we chose to be. It was important to live morally and to do good to others. Doing good and working hard would help a man rise to any station of life that they desired. He showed us that the world can be understood by men. He was able to understand that lightning is electricity, and that it can be manipulated.

It is my opinion that Franklin had a greater impact on our culture. He opened the possibilities of learning and understanding that had been limited by religion for years. His story is that of the typical American dream, rising from rags to riches on the power of his understanding.
Johnathan Edwards and Franklin were alike in that they both done or made good accomplishments. They both were great leaders in their own fields of passion and study. Their success and accomplishments have been studied and honored and noticed for over hundreds of years.

Jon Edwards differs from Franklin though in the fact he was a huge religious leader and spokesman. He led behind the pullpit preaching fire and brimstone, about salvation and hell. He preached heavily on turning from old ways and repenting or your lives would be damned for eternity. His writings and teaching are still used by preachers today to scare their listeners and believers into salvation, to the extreme. He was a great writer, and spiritual leader as he changed religion and way it was delivered forever.

Ben Franklin however was completely different for his fame. He was a man of many talents, and wasnt much he did that he didnt excel in. He was great printer, builder, and astonishing writer, where he spoke the truth and by using a fake name got his opinion heard. Ben Franklin also changed the way America saw things, by inventing the first bifocals, literally helping people see, inventing different forms of technology like Franklin stove, and lightning rod, which led to understanding and invention of harnessing electricity. Lastly Ben Franklin helped with the Revolutionary war effort by being one of the members who drew up declaration of independence and signing his name on it. Ben Franklin also changed the economy and jobs for america by creating insurance for homes, fir stations, and police force, to enforce the laws that were being ignored.

The tone that the author gives is very soothing. Crevecoeur is very positive in who he is and his beliefs and he presents a peaceful tone of America and how he felt accepted just by being here. Unlike many of the other writers, he's more in tune with hisself and sort of contridicts the other writers by giving the impression that you can take it easy and not be so over the top with your beliefs as long as you are confident in who you are.

Women in general, tend to show alot of feelings, especially when it comes to their children, husbands, family members, friends, and their beliefs. People are weak on some things in life and usually we will turn to God for answers. Mary questioned Gods reasons at certains point in the story but she always reeminded herself that He would not take her through anything she couldn't handle or deal with when He was her number one focus. Yes, she had a lot going on during that time with her sickness, wounds, starvation, coldness, and mothering her hurt child at the same time but she never lost focus on God. For that, He never left her side and got her through that horrible incident with the Indians. Her faith she showed in God paid off in the end of it all. When she thought about giving up, she'd remember a Bible verse and relate to it with her own witness and tragedy she was goin through. Her being a faithful Christian got her through and out alive.
This narrative is centered around a woman who was taken captive and kept isolated, for the most part, from all Christian friends and relatives.

According to Richard Slotkin, "In [a captivity narrative] a single individual, usually a woman, stands passively under the strokes of evil, awaiting rescue by the grace of God. The sufferer represents the whole, chastened body of Puritan society; and the temporary bondage of the captive to the Indian is dual paradigm-- of the bondage of the soul to the flesh and the temptations arising from original sin, and of the self-exile of the English Israel from England. In the Indian's devilish clutches, the captive had to meet and reject the temptation of Indian marriage and/or the Indian's "cannibal" Eucharist. To partake of the Indian's love or of his equivalent of bread and wine was to debase, to un-English the very soul. The captive's ultimate redemption by the grace of Christ and the efforts of the Puritan magistrates is likened to the regeneration of the soul in conversion. The ordeal is at once threatful of pain and evil and promising of ultimate salvation. Through the captive's proxy, the promise of a similar salvation could be offered to the faithful among the reading public, while the captive's torments remained to harrow the hearts of those not yet awakened to their fallen nature" (Regeneration Through Violence qtd. in http://www.wsu.edu/~campbelld/amlit/captive.htm)

Relate three characteristics of the captivity narrative to Rowlandson’s Narrative of the Captivity.
First, Mary Rowlandson is telling her own story narrative story of her captivity. She was captured about from Indians and taken away from her husband, children, and her whole garsion. Two of her children are dead and the other two she is not able to see. Mary was alone and you could say that she was tortured in somewhat of a way.

Second, is through all the ups and downs that she goes through every single day. Her faith in God was extremely strong and kept her going when she felt their was nothing left. She would think back to the bible and relay on its word and teachings. Her faith is what got her through it all.

Third, she finally realizes that Gods grace has saved her. Her faith in relaying on him had brought her out of captivity and it wouldnt had happened without him.
Mary being a woman held in captivity, enduring much suffering and harsh treatment from the Indians, and strongly depending on her faith to overcome the obstacles are all characteristics that link these to particual narratives together.

The narrative states that (single individual, usually a woman is held captive) Although Mary is accompanied by her children, she is also somewhat alone in that she has to be the adult or, the stronger person, througout the narrative. It is left up to her to fiugre out the does and donts of being held captive and to try at all times to make the best of her situation.

2. Secondly, She stands firm throughout her rigorous trials. Rowlandson endures many hardships as a result of being captured, however, she shows tremendous amounts of Puritan characteristics because she never fails to see that God will provide or see her through. We know from readings that Puritans were firm believers throughtout everything they're actions and everyday functions typically revolved around their belief. Rowlandson constantly refers or quotes from the bible in order to receive comfort or security that God is going to intervene.

3. Rowlandson awaits on God to interact because she feels that he will and he does. Her faith and belief in God's grace and mercy enable her to keep believing and acknowledge that God is there. She was brought out of captivity which shows a great example of how her beliefs are real and that God is real because she undoubtfully did not make it on her own.
First- Mary Rowlandson is a single woman who is taken captive by Indians. Two of her children are already dead. She is also not allowed to interact with her other two children. She is also away from her husband.

Second- She makes it through the difficult trials. She managed to stay alive and find ways to survive.

Third- She kept faith in God even though she was going through a rough time. She never doubted him. She read scriptures for encouragement. She was free from captivity.
First and foremost, she was captured in a hostile and enemy territory. She had to endure harships that few have ever had to deal with. Even though she was able to see her children, she wasn't able to interract with them, making her hardships all the more difficult.

In addition to being alone, she also was wounded by a gunshot. So she was not only lonely, but wounded. And yet, she still made it through the hardships that were placed upon her, which shows not only her strong will and spirit, but the resilience that mankind can show even in the strongest of trials.

Finally, she did not stray from her Puritan heritage, and remained true to the faith. She looked back and reminisced about how she took certain things for granted, but she not once waned from her religion. She finally got rescued by her husband, which, in context, could have been seen as an act of God, since she was waiting for a sign.
Well first the main captive is female, and is mostly alone. There are no christians with her or friends that can aid her. Rowlandson does get to see her kids and sister on very rare occassions but does not get to interact with them.

The second is dealing with all the hardships and wrong doing and harm she goes through. she is wounded by gun shot, constantly starved, threatened, and mocked. They steal from her what little she has or just take by threat of deadly force. She is also even taunted about the welfare of her family being told that her son is dead, and that they enjoyed eating him.

A third is her divine faith and belief that God will save her from her savage enemies. Her constant use of scripture for strength and courage behind every act of evil or wrong doing. She uses the bad in the act of God punishing her for her life long of sinful acts, then the all the good things as Gods sign of blessing and mercy upon her.
This narrative is centered around a woman who was taken captive and kept isolated, for the most part, from all Christian friends and relatives.

Second characteristic would be that the Puritans had not been as close to Christ as they should have been. This being said, Rowlandson felt that it cause her capture, gun shot wound, etc. Although she felt like she was being punished she still stayed close to God and found comfort in him throughout the ordeal.

Third characteristic is her rescue. While being saved by her husband, she also saved her self spiritually. When she looked back on her experience she realized that the things that felt so important to her in the past suddenly weren't anymore. Because of these trials Rowlandson realized that she needed none of the things she had before, but that she only needed God.
All three of Slotkin’s parameters are met in the narrative. Firstly, Mary Rowlandson was obviously a woman, and a single individual since he stood mostly alone throughout the story. She had to endure the trials and suffering by herself and that would be an example of her standing passively under evil-since she never fought her fate, or tried to rebel against things and tended moreso to just do the best she could given the unfortunate circumstances. Which leads to the final point of her awaiting rescue by the grace of God. The reasoning behind her being able to accomplish the first two, standing alone and being passive, was due to her faith in being rescued by God or someone influenced by God either one. And surely enough, it prevailed, and all of her suffering paid off in the end. Had she done things any differently, she never would have been able to survive.
Mary Rowlandson's Captivity narrative shares three characteristics with Slotkin's definition because she is a woman who has been captured in an Indian raid. And though in the beginning she was not alone but had her child with her it is dying and inevitable she is left alone to deal with the trials of being taken captive. Mary also makes it a point to go so far as to that if she had tried harder to live a sinless life then perhaps she would not have had to prove her faith unto the Lord with her hardships. Secondly, while being alone among the Indians she managed not only to survive from deadly injuries and starvation but still was able to see through all of the bad circumstances and keep her faith in God and believe that her rescue would come. And thirdly, upon being delivered from captivity she gives glory to the Lord for if not by His will she would never have been rescued. And with her rescue feels as though she has been given salvation not only from her physical hardships but also from the sinful acts of her past and through her faith has become closer to God.
It says in a captivity narrative that it was usually a single individual, which she was, and usually a woman, which she also was. Throughout her story, the readers are hoping for her to be saved, while she too dreams of being rescued by God. Slotkin says that through the captive's proxy the hope for salvation is there, but also we are left with the horrible circumstances that she had to endure before she was rescued by her husband, who bought her out of captivity. She also had to suffer in many ways unimaginable just so she could survive, while worrying about her children no less, and essentially being alone. Again, throughout the story we see her utterly unyielding faith, and because of that, she, and the readers, believe that it is the reason for her survival.
Rowlandson's Captivity narrative is about how those who are reading the narrative want her to survive throughout all the obstacles faced in hopes to be saved and by the Almighty God.
